June 17 is an important day to Icelanders, and therefore to Icelandic Canadians as well. It is the birthday of Jon Sigurdsson, the Father of Icelandic Independence, and the occasion is celebrated with speeches and salutes at the base of the Jon Sigurdsson statue near the north-east corner of the Legislative Building grounds in Winnipeg.
The real merriment begins after the ceremony, in the Muriel Richardson Auditorium in the nearby Winnipeg Art Gallery. A cabaret-style program featuring music, dance, film and more, carefully curated by the Núna (now) committee, will unfold before you. There is no better way to celebrate that hallowed day than with Núna (now) and the rest of the Icelandic-Canadian community!
